Dental Crowns

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a cap which covers the tooth. If your tooth is discoloured, chipped or had a lost or large filling, a crown may be the option for you. Dental caps can restore a tooth’s shape and enhance its appearance.

Do I need a dental crown?

There are certain circumstances where you will need a dental crown. This includes:

  • Replacing a large filling
  • Reshaping worn teeth
  • Covering discoloured teeth
  • After a root canal to protect from fractures
  • Teeth with cracks

What are the different types of dental crowns?

There are numerous types of dental crowns which can be used and will vary depending on your budget and teeth. Dental crowns are made from the following materials:

  • Ceramic
  • Metal
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Resin

What does the procedure involve?

You may need to have several visits to JC Dental. X-rays may be taken to examine the tooth. The tooth may also be filed to be reshaped for the crown. Once filed, the crown can be fitted to the tooth.

How long does a dental crown last?

The amount of time a dental crown lasts for will vary depending on what material was used, how well it is looked after and any wear and tear. Crowns generally last anywhere at least 10 years before needing to be replaced.

Dental bridges

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a porcelain tooth which is fitted in place of a missing tooth. The new porcelain tooth is fixed into place with crowns attached to the adjacent teeth. This not only repairs smiles but ensures teeth don’t move from their original set position. You can feel confident again with a brand new smile.

What does the procedure involve?

Preparation for your dental bridge includes reshaping the adjacent teeth to ensure there is room for the bridge. A model of your teeth may be made so the bridge is the correct size and colour. The tooth is then created to fit and match the adjacent teeth. You may be required to visit JC Dental on several occasions to make sure the bridge is fitted correctly.

How long do dental bridges last for?

This will vary depending on how well the teeth are cared for and maintained. Dental bridges can generally last for over 10 years. Make sure to follow good dental hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing your teeth and having regular check-ups at JC Dental. This will help to improve the longevity of your dental bridge.
