Dental Crowns

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a cap that covers your tooth. If your tooth is discoloured or chipped, or if you’ve had or lost a large filling, a crown may be a good option for you. Dental crowns can restore a tooth’s shape and strength as well as enhance its appearance. A dental crown, once permanently attached, fully encases your tooth, covering all of the parts of your tooth visible above the gumline.

Do I need a dental crown?

There are certain circumstances where you will need a dental crown. These include:

  • Replacing a large filling
  • Reshaping worn teeth
  • Covering discoloured teeth
  • After a root canal to protect from fractures
  • Teeth with cracks

The team at JC Dental can evaluate your current situation to determine if a dental crown is right for you.

What are the different types of dental crowns?

There are numerous types of dental crowns which can be used and will vary depending on your budget and teeth. Dental crowns are made from the following materials:

  • Ceramic
  • Metal
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Resin

What does the procedure involve?

In order to create a crown that fits perfectly in your mouth, you may need to have several visits to JC Dental. X-rays may be taken to examine the tooth. The tooth may also be reshaped or otherwise prepared for the crown.

We will need to create a mold of your mouth, which we use to create the crown. You may need to wear a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being created. Once your tooth is prepared and the crown is created, it can be fitted to the tooth.

We want to ensure your new crown fits perfectly, so you may also need to have minor adjustments made once the crown is permanently placed on your tooth. Typically, getting a new crown takes two office visits, but each patient is different, so talk with your dentist to determine your treatment plan.

How long does a dental crown last?

The amount of time a dental crown lasts for will vary depending on what material was used, how well you care for your teeth, and normal wear and tear. Crowns generally last at least 10 years before needing to be replaced, but many crowns last much longer.

Dental bridges

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of a porcelain tooth (or teeth), that fills the gap left by the missing tooth, which is anchored to neighbouring teeth using crowns. Bridges not only repair smiles but prevent remaining teeth from moving from their original positions, restore the ability to properly chew and speak, help to maintain the shape of your face, and restore your bite to its proper strength. You can feel confident again with a brand new smile that also keeps your mouth healthy.

What does the procedure involve?

Preparation for your dental bridge includes reshaping the adjacent teeth to ensure there is room for the bridge. A model of your teeth may be made so that the bridge is the correct size and colour. The new tooth and crowns are then created to fit your mouth perfectly.

As with dental crowns, you may be required to visit JC Dental on several occasions to make sure the bridge is fitted correctly. Our professionals will work with you to explain your treatment plan and to schedule your visits.

How long do dental bridges last for?

A bridge can last a long time if you care for and maintain your teeth as well as your new bridge. Dental bridges generally last for over 10 years. Make sure to follow good dental hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing your teeth and having regular check-ups at JC Dental. This will help to improve the longevity of your dental bridge and maintain your overall oral health.
